Disputing a credit-report error: what should I record before contacting the bureau?

Record the exact entry, the bureau and the report date, then use that bureau’s official dispute process and keep its reference. “My report is wrong” is harder to investigate than a dated description of one account, amount, status or other entry you are challenging.

A precise record helps you ask for a check without guessing at the cause. It does not establish that an entry must be removed, that debt review has ended, or that a new credit application will be approved.

What should I write down first?

Keep a private note with five headings:

  • The report: the bureau’s name and the date of the report you read.
  • The entry: enough information to identify the particular account or item through the bureau’s secure process.
  • The difference: what the report says and what you believe is inaccurate.
  • Available records: dated statements, correspondence or other documents connected to that difference.
  • The request: the precise information you want checked or explained.

Separate a fact from an assumption. For example, a payment proof records a payment; it does not explain every entry on a later credit report. If you do not know why the records differ, say that rather than filling the gap with a guessed explanation.

Where does the dispute start?

The NCR’s December 2024 dispute guideline describes starting with the relevant credit bureau and retaining its reference. Follow the bureau’s official submission requirements and use a verified private channel for any requested documents.

Keep a copy of what you submitted, the submission date, the reference and the response. If more information is requested, record what was requested and when you supplied it. Avoid sending the same unsupported allegation through several channels without keeping track of the replies.

Must I find every document myself?

The NCR’s December 2025 credible-evidence guideline says supporting information should be objective, reliable and verifiable. It also distinguishes the consumer’s ability to supply documents from the bureau’s and data supplier’s responsibility to seek evidence supporting disputed information.

Supply relevant records you actually have. Keep them in date order and explain which entry each one concerns. Do not edit a statement to make it match your explanation, or present a reconstruction as an original record. Ask what further information is needed through the official process.

Is this the same as asking for Form 19 clearance?

No. A question about issuing or submitting a clearance certificate is different from a dispute about a specific credit-report entry. If your concern is debt-review clearance, first identify which stage has actually been completed. Read Alliance’s existing Form 19 clearance guide.

Keep the certificate and relevant submission correspondence if they relate to the challenged entry. Do not assume that a disagreement about one entry proves that all clearance requirements have been met, or that every other entry on the report is incorrect.

What if I am dissatisfied with the bureau’s response?

The NCR guideline describes a further complaint route after the bureau process. Read the current NCR complaints guidance and the linked dispute guideline. Keep the bureau reference, dated steps, response and relevant records available. Timing and submission requirements matter; do not assume that any message automatically completes them.

A dispute is not permission to stop an agreed repayment. Keep a reporting query separate from a request to change a repayment arrangement. Use the appropriate private adviser or official route for your circumstances.

Need to understand which debt-review stage your question concerns? You can choose to contact Alliance privately. A bureau’s formal dispute process remains the route for challenging its report; this guide does not promise a particular finding or credit decision.
