Debt Review vs Debt Consolidation in South Africa

If you are comparing ways to manage several repayments, the phrase “one monthly payment” can be confusing. It may describe a new consolidation loan or payments under a debt-review arrangement. Understanding the service behind the wording matters before you share information or sign anything.

This guide explains the distinction and the questions to ask. It cannot determine which option is suitable for your finances.

What is a debt consolidation loan?

A consolidation loan is new credit used to settle other debts. You then repay the new lender under the new agreement. The NCR consumer brochure distinguishes this from debt counselling.

A lender must assess a credit application under the applicable requirements. An advertisement, online estimate or preliminary conversation does not guarantee approval. Ask who the lender is and what assessment is required before treating an offer as available to you.

What is debt review?

Debt review is a formal process under the National Credit Act through which a registered debt counsellor assesses a consumer’s circumstances and, where appropriate, proposes rearranging existing credit obligations. Debt review itself does not provide a new loan.

It carries legal consequences, including restrictions on credit access. You still have repayment responsibilities. The process does not automatically erase debt or stop interest. Alliance’s debt-review guide explains the wider process.

Compare the full proposal

For a consolidation loan, request the pre-agreement statement and quotation. Identify the interest, fees, insurance if applicable, repayment term, total repayment and which accounts would be settled. Ask what evidence you will receive that those accounts have actually been paid.

For debt review, ask how the proposed payment was calculated, what costs apply, how payments will reach credit providers and what still requires agreement or legal confirmation. Read Alliance’s costs and fees information and request a case-specific written breakdown.

A smaller instalment alone does not tell you the total cost. A longer repayment period can mean paying for longer, while fees and interest affect the overall amount. The NCR’s research on consolidation discusses these trade-offs; use current quotations for any comparison, not historical examples.

Check what you are being asked to sign

The NCR’s June 2024 consent warning describes cases where a consolidation offer led to a debt-review application without proper understanding.

Write down three things before proceeding: the provider’s identity, the name of the service and the document you are signing. If the answers change between the phone call and the paperwork, ask for an explanation. Keep a copy of the full documents and avoid rushed decisions.

Questions people often ask

Does one payment mean all my debts become one loan?

No. A payment arrangement can distribute money to several existing accounts without replacing them with a new loan. Ask who receives your payment, which accounts remain and how you can check each account’s progress.

Can I assume a consolidation loan is available while under debt review?

No. Debt review carries legal restrictions on further credit. Ask your registered debt counsellor to explain your current status and the applicable requirements before pursuing borrowing. An advertised offer does not establish that it is lawful or suitable in your case.

Will either option guarantee a lower total cost?

No. Compare the actual terms and your circumstances. Neither the number of payments nor an advertised monthly amount establishes the final cost or outcome.
